Upcoming Webinar: Development and Delivery of Smarter Cities Strategy via Project, Programme and Portfolio Management

“Smarter Cities” speaks of the ideal of building better cities with a focus on: liveability, workability and sustainability. The Smarter City SIG seeks to explore the application of project, programme and portfolio management to transform the vision and strategy of cities around the world into the results that meet the needs and aspirations of their stakeholders.

The CITY OF CAPE TOWN metropolitan municipality governs the City of Cape Town. It is the second largest city in South Africa after Johannesburg covering 2,400 km2 with a population of approximately five million people. The City government has five key strategic focus areas driving activity, which includes the objective to be a ‘Well Run City.’ It has an annual OPEX budget of approximately US$3 billion and CAPEX budget of US$500 million, raising 80% of its own funds. It has a staff complement of 33,000.

Craig Kesson is the Executive Director of Corporate Services at the City of Cape Town, with 11 directors reporting to him, a complement of 2,000 staff and a total operating budget of US$150 million. Craig Kesson has been instrumental in leading the City of Cape Town into a new era of modernisation with a key focus being the use of project, programme and portfolio management as core competencies in both the development and ultimately the delivery of the City’s strategy.

In this exciting webinar Craig Kesson will tell the story of the growth and success of project, programme and portfolio management in the City of Cape. How this journey has seen a turnaround in the City’s ability to manage projects and spend CAPEX budget well. How he engaged with appropriate teams of internal and external expertise to put capacity in place, train people and embed a new and successful way of doing things, saving approximately US$120 million.
