Streams of the 32nd IPMA World Congress: Digitalisation, Leadership, Agile

The theme of the 32nd IPMA World Congress is Project Management in the Digital Transformation Era. The Program Committee highlighted the key areas of the upcoming discussions and speeches.

Digitalization is changing the field of project management. Participants of the 32nd IPMA World Congress are an international community of the best experts and practitioners of project management. The Program Committee of the Congress includes more than 30 experts from Europe, Asia, America and Australia, heads of large companies, leading scientists and practitioners representing various areas of management, economics, and digital technology. The community will discuss the challenges and prospects of the digital age, to find solutions to the problems that it poses to project management. The organising team have identified five different streams.

1. Perspective

Participants will discuss the methods of Project Governance for a modern organisation, what are modern projects, programs and portfolios, and how they are implemented in certain contexts.

The main topics of the stream:

  • Context of Projects, Programs and portfolios in the digital world – strategies, products, processes, standards, culture. What is being changed, what needs to be changed
  • Digital transformation of the companies and organisations, cities and countryside, states and countries. Key values and crucial success factors of projects and programs of the digital transformation
  • Sustainable development in the digital transformation era. Challenges and prospects

2. Practice

The stream will include stories of successful projects in various fields, revealing new approaches and ways to effectively respond to new challenges.

The main topics of the stream:

  • The digital ecosystem of project management. Digital platforms and solutions for project management
  • Digital technologies in the project-oriented business. Project management in construction, engineering and different industries
  • Innovations in project management. New digital technologies and their implementation in projects, programs and portfolios: artificial intelligence (AI), VR, AR, blockchain etc

3. People

Participants will discuss what competencies a digital age Project Leader’s should have and how he can develop them.

The main topics of the stream:

  • The project team in the digital transformation and globalisation era. Shared leadership, common value creation, virtual teams and communications, consideration of national and cultural aspects
  • New people for a new economy. Key competencies, education and training, motivation, career path for project managers, millennials and generation Z
  • Project Manager in the digital world. Social relationship and network interactions, social media and information security

4. Methodology and Approaches

International experts will tell about current trends, hypotheses and research in the field of Project Management and discuss them with the participants of the event.

The main topics of the stream:

  • Digital project management – new ideas in project management methodology. Tendencies, hypotheses, research
  • Methodology, tools, practice of project management. Feedback. Mutual influence and convergence of knowledge, methods and technologies of management
  • New research methods in project management: big data, statistics, forecast and analytics. Experience and application prospects

5. Agility and Projects

Participants will discuss actual issues of development, transformation and applying agile approaches in the management of projects, organizations and business.

The main topics of the stream:

  • Successful hybrid approaches projects and programmes, integrating traditional projects, lean, kanban, design thinking. Methodology and successes examples agile application approaches to a large scale enterprise
  • Business agility and Agile organisations: different models for different organizations. Successful transformations: ways to develop agility. Provoking visions on the future –what’s beyond agile?
  • Application of individual and organizational agility competencies in non-IT: new product development, procurement, marketing and sales, HR
